After Election Day, especially one with major losses, your team needs to hear from you. Below is an email a TMC coach drafted with her clients. We hope this sample helps you, too.
Dear Team,
My heart is heavy today. I imagine yours is too. What’s happening in the world and in our country right now is stressful. I’m writing to acknowledge the moment we are in and provide potentially helpful resources.
First, I am grateful for the work you do every day as we support our community and push for a more just, equitable world. In challenging times, I feel so fortunate that I can draw strength from being part of this extraordinary team.
Whatever happens next, I want you to have the resources you need. Below is a list of supports and requests:
- Paid time off. You can use your time off in whatever way you need, including for mental health days. Please give your manager as much advance notice as possible.
- Post-election meetings and goals. Consider scheduling only necessary meetings over the next week (like team or 1:1 check-ins to handle rapid response). Take space to adjust to the evolving circumstances and reprioritize accordingly.
- Wellness, Safety and Security. Reach out to your manager if you need support with safety planning or information about wellness benefits. Please work from home if you need to (talk to your manager first to ensure in-person needs are covered). Finally, please update your computer passwords with a new secure password today and review our cybersecurity guidelines.
- Contact info. Be sure your contact information is current in the Staff Contact List so your manager and colleagues can get in touch with you if you’re working from home or out for any period of time. Please update your emergency contacts as well.
Below are additional resources you may find useful in the coming weeks:
- How to Actually Reprioritize (The Management Center)
- 10 Tips for Dealing with the Stress of Uncertainty (American Psychological Association)
- Finding Steady Ground (educator and activist Daniel Hunter)
- Mental Health and Wellbeing Resources (Dr. Cicely Horsham-Brathwaite PhD)
- When the World is Too Distracting—And It Feels Impossible to Work (a collection from HBR)
Your manager and I are available to answer any questions or provide additional support.
Best,
